Educational Advocacy

The Arc GP/HW partners with Michigan Alliance For Families to provide information, support and education for families who have children receiving special education services.

The Arc of GP/HW can refer you to free educational advocate available to families living within Wayne County. An Arc advocate will generally provide information and referral pertaining to Special Education related questions. This advocate is also available to attend school meetings with families to ensure that each child is getting all of the services needed from the school.

Some people choose to hire a private educational advocate. We can offer you a list of professional educational advocates who live and work locally in the Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods school district.

We sponsor a number of learning opportunities for individuals and families with a developmental disability which can empower them to advocate for their child. As part of our collaboration with the Michigan Alliance for Families, we offer informational meetings specific to Special Education. Topics that are presented in these meetings include: Individualized education programs (IEPs), Mediation and facilitated IEPs, The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Positive behavioral supports, Parent/professional collaboration, Rights and responsibilities and Assistive technology. Check out our Events Tab for upcoming meetings.
